  Department of English :

The department of English was established in the year 1961 with a moderate strength of mere 17 students. Teaching of English started from general level but in the times flow it shifted to special level. The department has made conspicuous progress in relation to academics and its results, along with quantitative growth. The Post Graduate department started in 1982. Soon after the establishment, the department created its own mark and glory till to this day. Department of English takes pride in the glorious tradition of teaching English Language and Literature to the Under-Graduate as well as Post- Graduate students.

Presently four permanent faculty members are contributing in the development of the department. The department is headed by Prof. Mrs. V. V. Patil along with the colleagues Prof. Mrs. K. D. Akhade, Prof. S. S. Deokar and Prof. G. C. Wagh. For Functional English two contributory faculty members, Prof. B. R. Kangune and Prof. R. B. Wagh are the helping hands. At the Post Graduate level all the department teachers are contributing along with the visiting faculty from vicinity. Prof. Suryakant Gadkari, Prof. Babasaheb Bawake and Prof. Umakant Kadam are the helping hands for Post graduate level.

To equip the students with communicative abilities and to make them competent users of English language with the changing scenario, the department has started Functional English Course in the year 1996. In the beginning it was run with the financial assistance from University Grants Commission and these days it is run as Self Financed Course (Non-aided). The response of the students to this course is praiseworthy. The department is students centered and this view is reflected in making them competent enough to face global challenges and as a result of this the department is running two short term courses: - 1. Spoken English and 2. Basic English Grammar.

To facilitate the teaching learning process department is ICT enabled with good configuration computer with broad- band connectivity and the LCD Projector. The department also has taken initiative to cope up with modern technological devices of language teaching and learning so the department is equipped with well furnished language laboratory.

The current faculty members have diverse research interests in language and literature. All the members are actively engaged in research activities. Presently all the four faculty members in the department have been granted with minor research projects from University Grants Commission. Following are the minor research projects granted by University Grants Commission.

1) Prof. Mrs. V. V. Patil: “Social awareness in the novels of Thomas Hardy with special reference to Tess of D’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure”.
2) Prof. Mrs. K. D. Akhade: “Farmers sufferings in the novels of Kamala Markendeya with special reference to Nectar in the sieve and Handful of Rice”.

3) Prof. S. S Deokar: “The study of feminine psyche in the novels of Shashi Deshpande”.

4) Prof. G. C. Wagh: “Difficulties and problems faced by under graduate students in learning English language of Shahuwadi Tahsil – A case study”.

Prof. G. C. Wagh has recently published his research article entitled “Different approaches and methods of teaching poetry in Indian classes by using various ideas and techniques” in renowned journal of English language and literature teaching - ELTAI,

The department has taken initiative in organizing two seminars. Department has organized a university level seminar on “A novel as an innovative form of literature on 6th January 2007 and also A two day national level seminar on “Reading literature in structural, post structural era and commonwealth literature” on 23rd and 24th December 2010, with the financial assistance of UGC. Delegates and participants from different colleges actively participated in the seminar.

For the updating and self orientation the faculties have attended 10 national conferences, 30 national and 32 state level seminars. Faculty being research oriented have presented 5 research papers in various seminars and conferences on varied issues.

Department takes pride in mentioning that one of our faculty members, Prof. Sunil Deokar represented India on the occasion of Globe Education Cultural Seminar organized by English Speaking Union- at London (U.K) on “Shakespeare and his stage”, from 8th August,2010 to 15th August,2010. Also one of our Post Graduate students Miss. Sonali Pansare represented India in the cultural exchange programme on Shakespeare Study Course organized by English Speaking Union at Stratford- upon- Avon (U.K).

Every year as a part of academics the department organizes Expert Lecture Series for the academic benefit of the students. In the present year the department organized lectures of eminent scholars like Dr. Umesh Jagdale, Dr. Anand Kulkarni and Dr. Suresh Kharat.

The department sees for the following activities in the future.

• Extension and updating of the language laboratory

• Motivation for research activities for the faculty and students.

• Guidance for NET/SET to the post graduate students.

• Expansion of departmental library.

• Career counseling for job opportunities to the students.
