Department Of Zoology
Introduction
R.B. Narayanrao Borawake college, established in June 1960, by Rayat Shikshan Sanstha, Satara,”Education Through Self- help is our motto”. It was stated by Padmabhushan Dr. Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, founder of Rayat shikshan sanstha, Satara. As stated in mission statement, from the establishment itself, the college has been running the ‘earn and learn ‘scheme for the downtrodden and economically backward students. The college provides work to all needy students, so that they can earn and learn simultaneously.
To provide the facility of education to the masses from remote places, tribal, rural, semi urban and urban areas by establishing network of educational institutions.
The department of Zoology was established with the inception of the college under the supervision and headship of Dr. A.T. Warute with Prof. Smt. Shete as lecturer and one non teaching member. Presently, the department under the headship ofMrs. Adhav U.K. and associate with seven assistant professor and two non- teaching staff members.
Now it is a fully fledged department with all modern equipments and infrastructure. It has two spacious laboratories of 50×30 feet and 30×30 feet sizes, a spacious staff room and a museum. 202 Specimens belonging to non-chordates, chordates and pathology were classified and displayed in the museum as per their classification. These specimens are more than enough to meet the requirements of B.Sc. curriculum. The museum is also provided with skeleton of various animals including man.
Classified wild animals also represent themselves in the form of their models. Stages of life cycle of various animals are displayed in the museum and Zoology Labs.
The department has nearly permanent slides of Embryology, Cytology, Invertebrates and Vertebrate parasites.
Nearly 300 bio-visual charts, LCD, Projector and Smart board are also available as teaching aid.
The department has various preserved animals as per B.Sc. syllabus. The department of Zoology also runs a departmental library with 197 books both for students and staff. The department has power point presentation with internet facility.
Scope and Importance of Subject
The study of Zoology is necessary for pre professional work in medicine, dentistry, nursing, veterinary science, dietetics, agriculture, fishery, poultry, sericulture, apiculture, conservation of wild life , sanitary engineering and many other fields. Medical sciences have profited from zoological discoveries.
Zoology is a branch of Science with lots of economic and practical importance because of our dependence upon animals for many products and uses, such as food, clothing, sources of drugs, subjects of experimentation etc.
Genetics, one of the branches of Zoology, has been a factor in producing better domestic animals. Animal and plants parasites influence man’s welfare in harmful ways. Many Parasites injure man and his domestic animals. Many animals carry disease as vectors and other themselves as disease agents, such as those causing Malaria.
Biological concepts influence your thinking in every realm of human interest. For instance, the concepts of evolution or the transformation of organism from one type to another during geological eras, has affected concepts in philosophy, psychology, sociology and many other disciplines. One of the fascinating facts of biological study is the ever changing nature of its concepts. Much biological investigation may be done with practical objectives in mind, but a greater amount is motivated by curiosity and an urge to explain what lies beyond our present knowledge of life process.
Mission
To promote the discovery and broad communication of knowledge about the biology of animals, including their evolution and their environment.
Vision
The department of Zoology promotes discovery and learning at all levels of biological organization. Our integrative focus reflects the importance of strong disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approaches and teaching. We strive for excellence and synergy in our coordinated programs of teaching, research and service. Recognizing essential roles of science and biology in lives of citizen today and tomorrow. We emphasize biological literacy in our teaching and outreach programs.
