Introduction

R.B. Narayanrao Borawake college, established in June 1960, by Rayat Shikshan Sanstha, Satara,”Education Through Self- help is our motto”. It was stated by Padmabhushan Dr. Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, founder of Rayat shikshan sanstha, Satara. As stated in mission statement, from the establishment itself, the college has been running the ‘earn and learn ‘scheme for the downtrodden and economically backward students. The college provides work to all needy students, so that they can earn and learn simultaneously.

To provide the facility of education to the masses from remote places, tribal, rural, semi urban and urban areas by establishing network of educational  institutions.

The department of Zoology was established in 1970 with the inception of the college under the supervision and headship of Dr. Warute A.T.  with Prof. Smt. Shete U.S. as lecturer and one non teaching member.  Presently, the department under the headship of Prof. Kalunkhe B.N. and associate Prof. Mrs. Adhav U.K. with six assistant professor and four non- teaching staff members.

Now it is a fully fledged department with all modern equipments and infrastructure. It has two spacious laboratories of 50×30 feet and 30×30 feet sizes, a spacious staff room and a museum. 202 Specimens belonging to non-chordates, chordates and pathology were classified and displayed in the museum as per their classification. These specimens are more than enough to meet the requirements  of B.Sc. curriculum. The museum is also provided with skeleton of various animals including man.

Classified wild animals also represent themselves in the form of their models. Stages of life cycle of various animals are displayed in the museum and Zoology Labs.

The department has permanent slides of Embryology, Cytology, Invertebrates and Vertebrate parasites.

Nearly 300 bio-visual charts are also available as teaching aid.

The department has various preserved animals as per B.Sc. syllabus. The department of Zoology also runs a departmental library with 197 books both for students and staff. The department has power point presentation with internet facility.

The department of Zoology promotes discovery and learning at all levels of biological organization. Our integrative focus reflects the importance of strong disciplinary and inter-disciplinary approaches and teaching. We strive for excellence and synergy in our coordinated programs of teaching, research and service. Recognizing essential roles of science and biology in lives of citizen today and tomorrow. We emphasize biological literacy in our teaching and outreach programs.
